Rohima’s Journey from Struggles to Strength

Personal Information:

Rohima Khatun (pseudonym), a 21-year-old woman from Ward No. 9 of Kaitola Union, Bera Upazila, Pabna District, was born in 2003. Despite facing physical and emotional challenges throughout her life, Rohima has demonstrated remarkable strength and determination. She is currently a graduate student in the Management department at University & Govt Edward College, Pabna.

Identifying the Problem:

Rohima’s journey to health and self-empowerment began at a young age. During her high school years, she noticed a persistent white discharge from her urinary tract, later identified as leukorrhea. Initially, her mother dismissed the issue as something all girls experience, which led Rohima to suffer silently. Alongside this condition, Rohima also dealt with severe abdominal pain during her menstrual cycles, making her physically weak and often underweight. Her struggles impacted her ability to participate in activities like playing and attending school regularly.

As she continued through her education, Rohima felt the weight of societal judgment. Classmates and teachers often underestimated her abilities due to her health condition and appearance. This negativity led to a deep sense of frustration, as she was constantly made to feel inadequate and incapable of achieving her goals.

BRED involvement:

The BRED (Bangladesh Rural Economic Development) center played a crucial role in Rohima’s journey to better health and empowerment. After participating in the SRMNCH project’s training sessions, Rohima sought medical advice at the BRED center, where she received free consultations from experienced doctors. The center not only provided her with the necessary treatment but also helped her understand the importance of maintaining proper menstrual hygiene, which had a significant impact on improving her condition. The project workers at BRED also guided Rohima through the process of seeking the right medical help and ensured that she had the resources to manage her health more effectively. By empowering Rohima with knowledge and practical solutions, BRED gave her the tools to take control of her health and well-being. The support she received from BRED not only helped her overcome her physical struggles but also inspired her to become an advocate for menstrual health in her community, spreading the awareness she gained to others in need.

The Turning Point and Success Story:

In February 2023, Rohima became a member of the adolescent group under the SRMNCH (Sexual and Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child Health) project. This was a pivotal moment in her journey. Through her participation in various training sessions, the most transformative experience was the Menstrual Hygiene Management training. This training provided valuable insights into the causes of vaginal discharge, abdominal pain during menstruation, and the overall health deterioration that women often experience.

After the training, Rohima took proactive steps to address her health concerns. With the guidance of project workers, she visited the BRED center, where she received free consultation from a doctor. Rohima’s condition improved significantly after receiving prescribed medication and medical advice. She learned the importance of proper menstrual hygiene, including the use of clean, dry clothes to prevent further health issues.

The support and medical care she received through the SRMNCH project not only helped her health but also gave her a sense of empowerment. Rohima now feels more confident and knowledgeable about her body and health. She has become a vocal advocate for menstrual health, spreading awareness among other girls and young women in her community.

Conclusion:

Rohima’s story is one of resilience, self-empowerment, and overcoming adversity. Despite the initial lack of understanding from her family and society, she found strength within herself and the support she received from health initiatives. Today, Rohima is not only in better health but also more determined than ever to break through the barriers that once held her back. Her journey is a testament to the power of education, support, and the courage to stand up for one’s rights to health and dignity.
